Amnesty International Nigeria has said that the reported death off seven people during the distribution of Customs rice recently lend credence to the fact that Nigerians are on the brink of starvation.
The organisation on it X handle held that the event of the sale of rice will leave no one in doubt that malnutrition and extreme poverty is silently creeping into Nigeria.
“The death of seven persons during stampede at the Nigeria Customs Service Yaba Lagos rice sale point is a chilling reminder that millions of people in Nigeria are on the brink of starvation, widespread malnutrition and deep poverty”. Amnesty international stated
Recall Customs after the death of prospective buyer of rice suspended the exercise citing the unforseen circumstances that arose from when it ran out of stock and announced the continuation the following day.
NCS said, “The crowd became desperate and charged through our barricades in search of rice bags inside emptied containers. In the stampede that ensued, some fatalities and injuries were regrettably recorded.
