A Deputy Comptroller of the Nigerian Customs Service, Mr. Andrew Essien has died on Tuesday in Abuja after he slumped during a session where was providing insights into the finances and revenues of the Customs.
Spokesman of the lower chamber of the National Assembly, Hon. Akin Rotimi, while confirming the tragedy, said the top Customs officer developed health complications during the meeting.
Rotimi said after he coughed once, he demanded for water which he was given immediately.
However, after taking the water, Essien collapsed and was rushed to the hospital.
He was confirmed dead at the hospital.
“During the engagement, which occurred around 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, 25 June 2024, the official developed sudden health complications. Despite the immediate and diligent efforts of first responders and medical personnel at the National Assembly clinic, he unfortunately passed away,” Mr Rotimi said in a statement.
The Public Accounts Committee (PAC), chaired by Bamidele Salam (PDP, Osun), was conducting its routine investigation into the NCS’s activities when the incident occurred.
