The Inspector General of Police Kayode Egbetokun, has ordered that policemen who ran an operational vehicle over a citizen in Edo State to report themselves at the Force Headquarters in Abuja.
Describing the scenario as “disturbing” the police headquarters asked for calm in Edo state as the police hierarchy will ensure justice is done over the matter.
A video had gone viral where a team of policemen ran over a man who laid down in front of a Toyota Sienna space bus while some others protested against an action of the police.
The policemen were being prevented from leaving the spot though NPO Reports could not ascertain what led to the situation.
But one of the claims had it that the man had declined to submit his phone to the policemen who then handcuffed him.
The people around had reportedly protested the arrest.
However, in order to escape what appeared like a mob, the policemen desperate to escape from the angry mob, had driven over one of the protesters.
After driving on the man for like 10 metres, the vehicle was forced to a halt.
The driver of the vehicle, sensing danger, had opened the door and ran for his life.
In a statement released by Olumuyiwa Adejobi, force spokesman, he said the operatives have been ordered to report at the headquarters in Abuja.
He said Egbetokun has condemned the disturbing incident where a police team ran a vehicle over a citizen on Thursday June 29, 2023 at Ekpoma, Edo State.
“The IGP has, therefore, directed the erring policemen, who have been in detention in Edo State, to report to the Force Headquarters Abuja on Monday for further action.
“Members of the public, particularly the people of Ekpoma, are implored to remain calm as the present leadership of the NPF will not condone such an act of unprofessionalism and illegality,” the statement added
