The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arrested Edo State Asset Recovery Chairman, Kelly Okungbowa , over alleged Naira abuse.
NPO reported that the Edo official was ,last week, caught in viral video spraying Naira notes on strippers at a social gathering.
This had sparked public outrage and demand for his arrest.
Speaking in a telephone conversation with NPO Reports yesterday, Fred Itua, the Chief Press Secretary to the state governor, Monday Okpebholo, disclosed the suspension of the state’s Public Safety Response Team (PSRT)- a department also headed by Okungbowa.
The EFCC, however, confirmed his arrest in a statement issued on their official X handle on Monday.
According to the statement, Okungbowa was arrested by the Commission’s operatives attached to the Benin Zonal Directorate.
The anti-graft agency assured that he will be prosecuted following the conclusion of investigation.
“Operatives of the Benin Zonal Directorate of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, on Monday March 17, 2025 arrested Kelly Okungbowa (a.k.a Ebo Stone) for alleged naira abuse.
“Okungbowa, who until recently was the coordinator of the Edo State Public Safety Response Team , PSRT, now suspended by the State Government, was arrested owing to a viral video where he was seen spraying and mutilating the Naira at a bar on March 9, 2025.
“He will be charged to court as soon as investigations are completed.” The statement read.
