Human rights lawyer, Femi Falana, on Tuesday said the Federal Government is not yet ready to reduce the cost of governance given the current spending culture of political leaders.
Falana, while speaking at the House of Assembly complex in Lagos during the nationwide protests organised by the Nigerian Labour Congress, said the rate of acquisition of exotic cars by members of the National Assembly puts a lie to the claims by the Federal Government to want to cut down costs of governance. His accusation came bare 24 hours after President Bola Tinubu gave an order for the implementation of the Oronsanye Report which had 12 years ago recommended drastic reduction in the cost of governance.
Specifically, Falana said members of the Senate and House of Representatives purchased jeeps some of which are as costly as N160m noting that a government that is interested in cutting down the cost of governance would not agree to such at this stage of national economic crisis. Falana spoke after members of the House of Assembly who came out to address the protesters had made their speech promising to communicate their grievances to the appropriate authorities.
