The Federal Government has charged the Abuja Federal High Court to sentence embattled leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, following his conviction on the terrorism charge filed against him.
NPO Reported that the court had earlier declared Kanu guilty of all the seven counts contained in the charge.
With the presiding judge, Justice James Omotosho, set to pronounce his sentence on the IPOB leader, the FG’s prosecution counsel, Chief Awomolo (SAN), urged the judge to sentence him to death, which is the judgement applicable to the count one, two, four, five, and six of the charge filed against him.
“With all sense of humility and as a prosecutor, the only sentence Lordship will impose for count one, two, four, five, and six is death sentence.
“Because this court has the power to do so and with respect, must do so. The language of the act is clear and the court ought to apply it strictly without deviation.” Awomolo said.
Meanwhile, Abia state lawmaker, Obi Aguocha, who spoke on behalf of Kanu as requested by the court had pleaded for mercy and clemency on his behalf.
Justice Omotosho is set to declare his sentence as he had earlier ordered that the court will reconvene by 3:50pm for the sentencing.
