Supporters of the Governor of Rivers state, Sim Fubara have on Tuesday destroyed a statue of the former governor, Nyesom Wike, located in the Obi/Akpor Local Government Area of the state.
This was as tension heightened in the state on Tuesday after the governor directed Heads of Administrations of the councils to take over with the expiration of the tenures of the council chairmen on Monday.
NPO Reports that the council chairmen, who are loyal to Wike, had vowed to stay put in offices in spite of the directive by the governor.
At the Obi-Akpor council, pro-Fubara men had taken positions as early as 6am on Tuesday to prevent any heady pro-Wike officials from getting into the premises.
At some point, gunshots were heard from some policemen who shot into the air.
But the pro-Fubara elements stood their grounds and insisted no pro-Wike chairman would be allowed into the council premises.
This had also led to some of those around to see the statue of Wike which stood in the middle of the council premises. They vandalised the statue after which they threw the remnants unto the road.
