Some gunmen have on Friday invaded the residence of the Resident Electoral Commissioner in Kogi State.
Confirming the attack, INEC, via its X handle, said the attackers number about 30 stormed the residence in the wee hours started shooting within the premises. The attackers also burnt some vehicles found within the compounded of the REC.
“In the early hours of today, Friday 1st December 2023, around 3.30am, gunmen attacked the residence of our Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) in Lokoja, Kogi State.
“The armed men engaged the security personnel in a gun battle for over 30 minutes until reinforcement arrived.
“While no lives were lost, property was destroyed in the ensuing gun battle. A team of combined security personnel have been deployed to protect the residence. “This incident occurred a day after a mob besieged our state office.” the statement read.
The commission called on the authorities to ensure a thorough investigation and enhance security protection for its personnel and assets in Kogi State.
The REC had just completed the governorship electoral process weeks ago with the candidate of the All Progressive Congress, Ahmed Ododo, declared as the winner.
He was majorly challenged by the candidate of the Social Democratic Party, Muritala Ajaka and his Peoples Democratic Party’s counterpart, Dino Melaye.
