There was confusion at the Zone area of Abuja Monday afternoon as officials of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission invaded the Zone 4 area where Bureau De Change operators transact business.
It was gathered that the commissions officials had arrived at about 4pm on Monday and made efforts to raid the place and arrest some of the operators. There was however resistance by the operators who insisted that none of their members would be taken away from the scene.
The scene became tense as physical attacks ensued leading to some of the armed members of the operatives to shoot into their to disperse those who had massed around them.
NPO Reports could not confirm the exact reason for the visit to the BDC operators who are known to have operated from the place.
Spokesman of the EFCC, Mr. Dele Oyewale, was yet to respond to inquiry over the development at the time of filing this report.
One of the operators who spoke with the NPO Reports on telephone Monday evening confirmed the visit of the EFCC but said they failed to make any arrest. He also confirmed that no one was injured in the fracas that broke out.
He said the EFCC officials accused the operators of being behind the Foreign Exchange crisis worsening the country’s economy. “And we told them we are not the ones. We told them they should go to the Central Bank of Nigeria,” he said
