Accuses Lagos Lawmaker of Causing Religious Divisions Among Constituents
- Safiu Kehinde
Chief of staff to the President Femi Gbajabiamila on Thursday said member of the Lagos State House of Assembly Desmond Eliot almost cause his sack by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu last year.
Gbajabiamila said Eliot’s alleged involvement in the push for the removal of the Speaker of the House of Assembly Mr. Mudasiru Obasa came to the knowledge of the President who informed him.
“I almost lost my job as the Chief of Staff last year because of Desmond Elliot.
“If I lie today, you can go and verify it.
“Mr. President called me to his study in his house in Abuja during the Obasa saga.
‘”I heard this Desmond is your boy, the one we gave to you.’
“I said ‘Yes Sir.’
“‘I heard he is part of the people that are causing problems in the Lagos Assembly.’
“Immediately, I said no. Desmond is not part of them. I didn’t speak to Desmond to confirm if he was indeed part of them. I just said no, he is not.
“Well, I’m telling from intelligence that he is part of them. Go and tell him to retrace his steps” That is what Mr. President told me.” Gbajabiamila said.
He recalled calling Desmond and urging him to withdraw from the impeachment plot.
“I called Desmond and told him that if you are one of these people; if you are part of them, get out of there.
“He started dribbling like Maradona.
“Three days later, the Director-General, DGSS, called me that ‘Chief, there is a problem.
“Your name is being mentioned all over the place that you are the one supporting Desmond with this impeachment move.’
“Of course, the President will not believe that Desmond will do such a thing that I will not know about.
“I told the DGSS that I called Desmond and he said he will do this and that.
“I called him again and said Desmond, go and make a public statement that you are not part of this. Till tomorrow.
“If it is not for the kind of relationship I had with Mr. President, I wouldn’t have been here today.” Gbajabiamila said.
The Chief of Staff further said that apart from being part of a plot to impeach Obasa which almost caused him his job, Eliot was fingered as creating religious division among constituents.
“I’ve never let people bring religious division into this our constituency. For Desmond to be getting CAN to write official letter to me and the party and causing division between Muslims and Christians.” He said.
NPO Reports that Eliot is fighting the battle of his life to be re-elected as member of the Lagos parliament.
