In a reflective statement, the former spokesman described Tinubu as a “great teacher” whose leadership style continues to shape his thinking years after leaving public office.
He noted that his experience working closely with the president exposed him to a deeper understanding of governance, particularly the importance of timing and strategic patience in solving complex national issues.
According to him, Tinubu’s approach to leadership goes beyond identifying problems, emphasising instead the need for careful sequencing and application of solutions within the broader political and economic landscape.
Ngelale recalled that as a newcomer to government, he initially had a strong impulse to immediately address challenges as they arose, but said Tinubu’s guidance helped him understand that some problems require restraint and long-term planning.
He added that certain issues evolve over time, and that premature decisions, even when well-intentioned, may undermine more comprehensive solutions.
The former presidential aide also highlighted what he described as Tinubu’s keen awareness of individuals within his political circle, including their strengths, weaknesses and motivations, which he said contributes to the president’s decision-making process.
Reflecting on his time in office, Ngelale said he was entrusted with significant responsibilities at a relatively young age, including serving as the voice of the presidency and representing Nigeria on critical global matters.
He, however, noted that the full weight of the lessons learned during that period only became clearer after he left government.
“And yet, years after leaving office, new levels of understanding of rich but not fully grasped wisdom spoken to me years prior by the great teacher are unlocked.
Ngelale added that in his current role as a businessman and father, he increasingly draws from the guidance he received during his time at the Presidential Villa.
“Presently, as an enterprise owner and father of five children, far removed from the intricacies and jousting of power’s corridors, I rely more than ever on words spoken to me by my Father and Teacher while I write the content of this quiet chapter of my life.”
He further described Tinubu as a leader whose rise to power was shaped by performance and resilience, adding that Nigerians are fortunate to have such leadership at a critical period in the country’s history.
