The Abia State House of Assembly has revoked a law which allows for the payment of monthly pensions to former Governors and Deputies in the state.
Through a bill sponsored by Hon. Uchenna Okoro, the Majority Leader and member Representing Arochukwu State Constituency, former governors and deputies in the state who were entitled to pensions will no longer be paid their pensions.
The bill sponsored by Okoro was entitled “A Bill (H.A.B 11:) for a Law to Revoke The Abia State Governors and Deputy Governors Pensions Law No 4 of 2001 and for other Matters connected therewith.” Speaker of the House, Hon. Emmanuel Emeruwa, announced the passage of the bill after its first, second reading, consideration at the committee of the whole and its third reading during the day’s plenary. He said the bill once assented to by the governor, would be referred to as “Abia State Governors and Deputy Governor’s (Repeal) Law 2024.”
Since the return to democracy in 1999, the state had produced Governors Orji Uzor Kalu, Theordore Orji and Anthony Ikpeazu. The current Governor is Mr. Alex Otti.
