The Kano Command of the Nigeria Police on Friday, said it would not carry an order by Governor Kabir Abba Yussuf to evict factional Emir of Kano, Aminu Ado Bayero from the palace.
Bayero is current holding court at the GRA Nasarawa palace, annex of the Kano Palace situated at the GRA area of the state capital.
Media reports quoted Commissioner of Police, Usiani Gumel as saying that the police will not carry the order of the Governor which was issued Thursday night after a court technically nullified the reinstatement of Emir Sanusi Lamido Sanusi.
“The police will not evict the deposed Emir because the same government has filed a case at the State High Court on the eviction order, which would come up on Monday, 24th June 2024.
“The government is jumping the gun because the same government has filed a case on the eviction order, which is coming up on the 24th of June, 2024. So, if we carry out the order, it is like we are pre-empting the court because we don’t know what will happen at the court,” Gumel had said
Issuing the order on Thursday, the Attorney General of the state Haruna Dederi, had directed the police boss to remove the deposed 15 Emir of Kano from the Nasarawa mini palace where he is staying.
Since the reinstatement of Sanusi, there have been tension in the ancient Kano city over the presence of two Emirs.
While Sanusi is holding court at the main Kano palace, Bayero is holding court at the GRA annex palace.
It is believed that Bayero has the backing of the former governor of Kano state and current National Chairman of the All Progress Congress, Dr. Umaru Ganduje.
Ganduje while serving as the Governor of Kano, had deposed Sanusi over alleged insubordination.
His government was succeeded by an opposition party, the Peoples Democratic Party whose Governor, Yussuf has supervised the setting aside of the law that led to the deposition of Sanusi.
