A senator representing Imo East Senatorial District, Ezenwa Onyewuchi, has dumped the Labour Party (LP) for the All Progressives Congress (APC).
According to the Senate majority Leader, Opeyemi Bamidele who announced the senator’s decision on Tuesday, Onyewuchi’s decision to dump the Labour Party is to allow him support President Bola Tinubu.
Onyewuchi’s defection brings to three, the number of APC Senators from Imo State.
He said that he resigned from the Labour Party owing to the crisis in the party.
He also noted that his decision was is in line with the dictates of the constitution.
Shortly after Onyewuchi welcomed by APC lawmakers, he was ushered to take his seat at the APC wing of the Senate Chambers.
His defection was witnessed by the Governor of Imo, Hope Uzzodinma.
Onyewuchi, a former member of the House of Representatives who represented Owerri-Municipal/Owerri-North/West-Federal Constituency defected to Labour Party from the PDP in 2022 to contest for the senatorial seat.
He letter as read by Senate President Godswill Akpabio reads, “This decision is due to the intractable division and crisis in the Labour Party that sponsored the earlier election into the Nigerian Senate,” his letter reads.
“The communication is therefore made pursuant to Section 68(1g) of the constitution of the federal republic of Nigeria 1999 as amended.
“Imo state and the entirety of the south-east remain united under the leadership of our performing governor, his excellency, Hope Uzodimma.”
