The Lagos State Police Command has halted plans for an unapproved Egungun festival reportedly organised by a group identified as the Oje Parapo of Oregun.
This was contained in a statement by the Force’s Public Relations Officer, SP Abimbola Adebisi, on Wednesday.
This is following a circulation by the group of handbills and social media posts announcing movement restrictions for residents.
The police revealed that twelve suspects connected to the publication have been arrested and are currently under investigation.
According to the Command, the materials circulated by the group attempted to impose unlawful restrictions on the freedom of movement, expression, and dignity of Lagosians.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Olohundare Jimoh, ordered the suspension of the festival, scheduled for 27th and 28th November 2025, citing growing fear among residents and the potential for a breakdown of law and order.
He stressed that no individual or group has the authority to take the law into their own hands or hinder the free movement of citizens across the state.
“This restriction suffices to make it clear that no group should take laws into their hands and prevent other Nigerians from movement around and throughout the State at will at any time.
“The Lagos State Police Command will continue to firmly protect the fundamental human rights of everyone in the State.
“The Command further warns anyone planning unauthorized gatherings or activities that are capable of threatening public peace and safety to desist forthwith from such plans.”
The police revealed that similar unrest was averted days earlier in Mafoluku, Oshodi, where another group attempted to incite disorder through widely shared publications.
Officers from the Makinde Division acted promptly on 23rd November 2025, arresting twelve suspects who will face prosecution upon completion of investigations.
CP Jimoh reaffirmed that security agencies can no longer guarantee safety around the planned Oregun Egungun Festival due to the tension already stirred among residents.
He warned that anyone attempting to undermine peace and stability in the state will face the full weight of the law.
The Lagos State Police Command urged the public to remain calm and continue their daily activities without fear.
Residents are encouraged to report suspicious behaviour through the Command’s emergency lines: 08063299264 and 09053872208
