Operatives of the Lagos State Wastewater Management Office (LSWMO) have sealed off a mega plaza in Breadfruit Street, Lagos Island for discharging untreated wastewater into the public drains, through the use of a pumping machine.
The General Manager of the Agency, Engr. Adefemi Afolabi, speaking on the offence maintained that the State has zero tolerance for Environmental pollution and degradation.
According to the statement, the agency monitored the property and took pictures of inappropriate and unacceptable behaviours.
Further noting, it was revealed that the pumping machine is used at night to pump untreated wastewater into the public drains, which pollutes the environment, therefore exposing the citizens to communicable diseases, through this discharge of untreated wastewater onto the roads, drains and lagoons.
“The Enforcement and Compliance officers of the Agency took time to monitor the property at night and took pictures of inappropriate and unacceptable behaviours.
“The officers later sealed the property after photographic evidence was obtained in the night.
The Agency, according to Engr. Afolabi, remains undeterred in its efforts at ensuring a clean and healthy environment in the State, for the sake of the public health of the citizens of the State.
The General Manager emphasised that properties and facilities in the State that fall foul of the law will continue to be sanctioned in line with the provisions of the Lagos State Environmental Management and Protection Law 2017.
