As Command Investigates Allegations
The Nigeria Police Force has summoned the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of the GRA Police Division in Asaba, Delta State, CSP Joseph Udoh, for questioning following a complaint alleging abuse of power and harassment of a Delta State resident, Tomi Akporoghene.
This is following a post by Akporoghene, who narrated how he was treated by officers after rushing a dying young man, who had collapsed on the road, to a hospital earlier this year.
According to him, he acted on the advice of a medical doctor he had contacted and decided to assist the victim when others reportedly walked past.
However, the young man was confirmed dead on arrival at the hospital.
The narrator stated that, acting in line with protocol since he did not know the deceased personally, he requested that the police be informed.
He was subsequently taken to the GRA Police Station in Asaba to report the incident.
He stated that rather than being treated as a witness or Good Samaritan, he was accused of murder and his statement was taken under caution.
The complainant further claimed that the DPO, CSP Joseph Udoh, threatened him for intervening, allegedly stating that he would “deal with him for acting like Jesus,” and warning that such treatment would discourage him from helping anyone in distress again.
The individual said the family of the deceased later confirmed that their son had an underlying medical condition. Despite this, he claimed he remained under severe pressure and only avoided being charged with murder after the intervention of a senior government official.
He further alleged that even after the intervention, officers at the division collected money from him as bail, leaving him with only ₦2,000.
Reacting to the complaint, the Nigeria Police Force, through its Complaint Response Unit (NPF-CRU), confirmed that the matter is under investigation.
In a statement posted on its X platform, the NPF said:
“The Divisional Police Officer, GRA Asaba, @DeltaPoliceNG has been summoned and will be in Police Force Headquarters Abuja for questioning concerning this complaint by next week, thank you for contacting NPF-CRU. #NoToImpunity.”
