There were fears many were dead after some armed men invaded commercial bank premises in the Benue state major town of Otukpo on Friday.
It was gathered that the ensure state town was thrown into confusion after the men simultaneously robbed banks in the state capital shooting policemen attached to the banks .
Eyewitnesses said many took to their heels in search of safety as sounds of gunshots echoed through the main part of the town.
Witnesses said the armed robbers storm the banks at exactly 3:30pm on Friday and operated unchallenged till about 4:50pm.
Contacted to confirm the incident, the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Catherine Anene, stated, “I have not been able to speak with the DPO or any of the officers there, but I am aware that there was an incident.”
It was gathered that the robbers first made for the only police station located in the town and attacked it carting away their guns.
Seven people, including policemen and a former councillor who was said to be in the bank at the time the robbers arrived were reportedly killed.
