An accident involving several vehicles left thousands of commuters and motorists stranded on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, a key route linking Nigeria’s commercial capital to other parts of the country.
The incident occurred this morning on the Kara Bridge section of the expressway, heading towards OPIC, at about 7am on Friday.
Confirming the incident, the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) wrote on X.
“We recorded an accident on the Kara bridge inward Opic on the Lagos Ibadan Express Way with multiple vehicles. LASTMA personnel and other Emergency responders have swung into action to rescue the victims and also clear the affected vehicles,”
“The incident has dragged traffic backwards Otedola bridge. Patience is required from the road users.”
The agency also announced that some of the affected vehicles had been removed, and two lanes heading toward OPIC were reopened to traffic. Efforts to tow away an articulated truck involved in the crash were still ongoing at the time.
Personnel from the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Nigeria Police Force (NPF), LASTMA, and other emergency services were actively working to manage the scene and ease the traffic situation.
