Nigerian lawmaker representing Borno South Senatorial District, Sen. Ali Ndume, is set to raise a motion before the Senate over the alleged systemic genocide against Christians in the country.
This was disclosed in a post shared on X on Monday.
According to the statement, the motion is billed to be discussed on Tuesday when the lawmakers resume their plenary session.
The motion titled “Urgent need to correct misconceptions regarding the purported ‘Christian genocide’ narrative in Nigeria and international communities” was introduced by Ndume and reportedly supported by Senators Sani Musa Aliyu Wamakko, and Ibrahim Bomai
The lawmakers, in the motion, sought the federal government’s, especially the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and pertinent security agencies, employment of a data-driven strategy in their public communications.
They also urged the foreign affairs ministry and security agencies to provide accurate casualty numbers, detailed contextual reports, and results of investigations regarding victims of insecurity.
This, according to Ndume and the motion’s co-sponsors, is essential to combat misinformation both within the country and internationally.
They noted that the proposal aims to address and rectify an issue of “dangerous misrepresentations of the country’s security challenge as a campaign of Christian genocide.”
The ceaseless killings and attacks on religious houses had raised concerns and attracted the attention of international bodies, including the western media.
Meanwhile, the past week saw the spread of reports and speculations of alleged ongoing genocide attacks on Christain communities in Nigeria.
NPO Reported that certain international platforms and online influencers had alleged that terrorists operating in Nigeria are engaged in a systematic genocide against Christians.
Reacting to the claims while speaking at the Imo State Governor’s, Hope Udozinma, book launch ceremony in Owerri last week, President Bola Tinubu labelled the claims as a blatant lie.
The President had maintained that there is no religious persecution in Nigeria.
