The Nigerian Football Federation is set to dump American sportswear giant, Nike, for a new $8.5 million worth of deal with Addidas.
Ibrahim Gusau, the outgoing NFF President, announced the completion of the new deal with Addidas during a press briefing at the federation’s headquarters in Abuja on Thursday.
In what was considered a parting gift by the ex-NFF boss before announcing his resignation, Gusau said his administration had agreed a potential $4.5M-per-year adidas deal to supply kits for Nigeria’s national teams, although it has not yet been officially confirmed.
According to reports, Gusau said they were also negotiating with Nike, but the sportswear giant was unwilling to improve its current $500K-per-year deal.
Meanwhile, he noted that Nigeria cannot announce the adidas agreement until the Nike contract is resolved by the end of the year 2026.
The contract with Adidas is billed to bring in $4.5M/year in cash to the federation.
The German brand will also provide $4M/year in equipment for the various national teams coupled with the NFF’s recovery of 20% of the sales made by Adidas in the stores.
The announcement of the new deal is coming amid the leadership scuffle within the NFF which saw Gusau resign today amid pressure.
Aside the speculated leadership crisis within the federation, Gusau’s resignation was also linked to the failure of Nigerian women’s national team Super Falcons to qualify for the 2027 FIFA World Cup after their abysmal performance at the 2026 Women African Cup of Nations where they failed to advance to the semi-finals and secure an automatic ticket for world cup.
Their failure compounded the woes of the NFF leadership which also witness the Super Eagles failed to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
