About 376 Nigerians who were evacuated from Sudan have arrived Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory.
The evacuees arrived at about 11:40pm Nigerian time to the waiting arms of officials of the Nigeria Diaspora Commission led by its chairman, Hon Abikep Dabiri-Erewa.
Confirming the arrival, NIDCOM, via its twitter handle, wrote “Nigerian Evacuees Arrive In Abuja The first batch of Nigerians who fled war-torn Sudan arrived via military jet C13 at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport at about 2340HRS with an estimate of 376 evacuees. 3rd of May, 2023.”
NPO Reported earlier that boarding was ongoing on Wednesday with a plane belonging to Air Peace and another belonging to the Nigeria Air Force on ground to bring the stranded Nigerians, mostly students, back to the country.
They were flown home from Egypt having escaped the deadly war going on Sudan.
An armed conflict between rival factions of the military government of Sudan began on 15 April 2023.
It started when clashes broke out in Western Sudan, in the capital city of Khartoum, and in the Darfur region. As of 25 April, at least 559 people have been killed and more than 4,000 others had been injured.
