Officers of the Delta State Police Command have on Wednesday fired teargas cannisters at protesters who stormed their station in agitation over the murder of a suspected gunrunner, Mene Ogidi, by a policeman.
NPO Reported that the killing of Ogidi by a now dismissed officer, ASP Nuhu Usman, had sparked outrage and triggered the demonstration by angry youths at the Effurun police station yesterday.
Usman had in a disturbing video publicly executed an unarmed Ogidi, shooting him at point blank.
The late 28-year-old suspect was reportedly apprehended by residents while attempting to waybill a Barretta gun and live ammunition at a bus park.
Prior to the police arrival, the suspect had his arms and legs tied by the residents of the area where the shooting occurred.
The had invited the police with the expectation that Ogidi will be formally arrested and detained.
However, in a tragic twist of event, the lead officer, Usman, executed the suspect on the spot despite his plea and promise to reveal those who handed the gun over to him.
The development would trigger the protest at the police station which escalated into violent attacks on station’s properties after the officers fired teargas at the protesters.
Videos shared on X showed some of the protesters smashing the glasses of the police operational vehicles as they retreat from the station.
