- Issues 48-hour Ultimatum
Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project, (SERAP), a non-profit organization has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to order the immediate release of the Foundation for Investigation Journalism (FIJ), Fisayo Soyombo.
This was contained in an X post via the organization’s handle, @SERAPNigeria, on Friday.
NPO reports that the journalist was arrested by the 6 Division of the Nigerian Army in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, on Friday.
The statement by SERAP issued a 48-hour ultimatum for release for Soyombo otherwise the administration will be met in court.
“BREAKING: We urge President Tinubu to direct Nigeria’s army chief to immediately release journalist Fisayo Soyombo who is detained by the 6 Division of the Nigerian Army in Port Harcourt.
“We’ll see the administration in court if he is not released within 48 hours. #FreeFisayoNow”
His arrest was announced by the Foundation of Investigative Journalism (FIJ) in which they called on the Nigerian Army not to compromise Soyombo’s work as his devices were reportedly seized by the army officers.
“We call on the Nigerian Army to act responsibly and not destroy the evidence. The truth must prevail, and Fisayo Soyombo’s work should not be compromised.”
“All his devices have been seized. The Army must preserve his evidence and truth.
“Don’t destroy the evidence. We insist the truth must come out. It’s in your custody, don’t destroy the evidence.” FIJ wrote.
