Accuses Senate of Rushing Proceedings
- Safiu Kehinde
A member of the Senate Adam Oshiomhole on Tuesday expressed anger over the process of lawmaking in the Upper chamber of the National Assembly.
Oshiomhole signified his intention to speak after the Deputy Senate President Jibrin Barau, who presided read bills needing concurrence when the Senate reconvened on Tuesday.
The presiding officer had read the bills prompting Oshiomhole to rise up to accuse the Senate of rushing the process in what he described making no sense.
The Edo lawmaker noted that it will be difficult to make salient points when the lawmaking process is rushed.
“We are not meant to rubberstamp and the way you are reading this thing it will take a genius to be able to make a point.
“We are making law Sir. I want it to be on record that I am trouble by the way at which we are rushing without details.
“And tomorrow it will be said that the argument between Senator Ndume and the President, you were there, I was not there. If we rushed it like this tomorrow I said I didn’t know anything about the law, you will say I was in the Senate.” He said.
Speaking on one of the bills which centered on training and Nigeria’s development, Oshiomole considered the bill irrelevant as he noted that several institutions across the country have their respective training departments.
“On this issue, what is the meaning of training and Nigeria development? We have established several insitutions. Every organisations has a training department.
“When we create laws for everything for training and Nigeria development, it does not makes sense to me. I don’t have the privilege to go through it and understand why it should merit the time we spend on it.
“With due respect Sir, laws are laws they are not motion and they are supposed to be interpreted by courts of law. I am troubled. Very troubled.” He added.
As contained in the Senate’s order paper of the day made available to NPO Reports, the bills listed for concurrence include; National Examinations Council (NECO) Act (Amendment) Bill, 2025, National Board for Arabic and Islamic Studies (Establishment) Bill, 2025 (HB. 1469), Nigeria Weights and Measure Regulatory Agency (Establishment) Bill, 2025, and the Chartered Institute of Training and Development of Nigeria (Establishment) Bill, 2025
