At least three people have been confirmed dead with 20 others injured in a fatal road accident in Osun State.
The Osun Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Sunday Adebayo, made this known in a statement issued on Saturday.
According to Adebayo, the accident involving a Toyota Hiace bus and Volkswagen Golf car occurred yesterday at Tonkere town, on Ife-Ilesa expressway.
The FRSC boss said that preliminary findings indicated that speeding and dangerous driving contributed to the accident.
He explained that the accident involved 23 people comprising 11 females, nine males and three children – two boys and a girl.
The sector commander disclosed that the deceased comprised two females and one male.
“Three people died. We have about 20 others who were injured in the accident.
“The accident happened due to speeding and dangerous driving,” Adebayo said.
He added that the FRSC patrol teams from Ife and Ilesa were deployed to the scene of the accident to conduct rescue operations and manage the aftermath of the crash.
He said the injured victims were taken to an undisclosed hospitals for medical attention.
The sector commander appealed to motorists to exercise caution while driving, adding that lower speed could reduce the severity of injuries and fatality during accident.
Adebayo assured residents that the corps would sustained its public enlightenment campaigns and road safety initiatives across the state to reduce road accidents and prevent avoidable deaths.
He urged motorists to recognise their responsibility towards other road users, noting that road safety should be a shared responsibility for safety of lives and property.
