A former Governor of Kano State, Alhaji Ibrahim Shekarau today is expected to be formally received back into his former party, the Peoples Democratic Party. Presidential candidate of the party, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar arrived the ancient city Sunday evening ahead of what many political watchers consider to be a major breakthrough for the PDP and Atiku. Kano is considered a major political voting bloc with the touted almost 7 million voters.
Shekarau had joined the All Progressive Congress in 2019 and won a seat to the Senate on the platform of the party.
Things however got sour with the current governor, Umar Ganduje leading to his decision to quit the party.
He was part of the team that formed the New Nigerian Peoples Party with former Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso.
However, disagreements arose leading to his decision to defect to the PDP.
Shehu Sagagi, who is the Chairman of the PDP in Kano State said all party members are eager for the arrival of Shekarau into the party.
He said, said, “I am delighted to tell you that Shekarau, being the highest political office holder as provided by the constitution, has accepted and we have welcomed him back to our dear party, the PDP.
“All arrangements are in top gear in preparation to receive Atiku Abubakar who will be in Kano today (Sunday), hopefully to receive Ibrahim Shekarau. We have accepted to follow him and we shall succeed, God willing.”
