Operatives attached to the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command have arrested human right activist and politician, Omoyele Sowore, shortly after appearing at the Federal High Court in Abuja for the trial of Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) leader, Nnamdi Kanu.
NPO earlier Reported Sowore’s meeting with Kanu at the court’s premises before the commencement of the IPOB leader’s trial.
The 2023 African Action Congress (AAC) Presidential candidate would in a video shared on his X handle assured Kanu of his freedom
Following the meeting, Sowore was accosted by security operatives who insisted he accompany them to the FCT Police Command.
According to reports, one of the officers said they were acting on an instruction from the Commissioner of Police.
“The commissioner of police said we should bring you to the office,” the officer said.
Sowore however questioned the legality of the arrest.
While maintained that no formal invitation was extended to him, the activist however insisted his lawyer accompany him before being taken away in a police van.
The arrest of the Sahara Reporters publisher had however been linked to his role in the #FreeNnamdiKanu protests held in Abuja on Monday and also in other cities across the country.
The protest had led to the arrest twelve persons, including Kanu’s younger brother, Emmanuel, and one of his lawyers, Alloy Ejimakor.
The are currently remanded in Kuje Prison following the demonstration demanding Kanu’s release.
