The police have released a Facebook user, Chioma Egodi, who criticized Nagiko tomato paste over its taste.
NPO Reports had on Tuesday reported how Egodi made headlines after she complained that the tomato paste contained too much sugar, a claim the company’s management accused Egoli of making “to mislead our esteemed customers and discredit the image of Erisco Foods Limited.”
Reacting in a statement on Tuesday, Chief Executive Officer of the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission, Babatunde Irukera disclosed that the company had been summoned over alleged arrest of Egoli.
Announcing her release on Tuesday evening via his X platform, Irukera was grateful for the restoration of Ms Egodi adding the commission is determined to ensure that such act never happen again.
“Further Update: Ms Chioma has been released on bail. Mutual commitments by both parties before the police(to which FCCPC is not party), but @fccpcnigeria investigation continuing regardless, Irukera’s post read.
“Grateful for the restoration of Ms. Egodi’s liberty, but determined to ensure we never walk this path again.
“Criminality in commerce is an exception. Our society cannot endure under the threat or fear that fair expressions (when properly so) can become subject of law enforcement.”
He added, “Absolutely! Her freedom was just a preliminary but urgent step. The fundamental issues of how this occurred remain and require attention. It doesn’t even matter if she comes to a mutual amicable resolution with the company. The underlying principle must be addressed; and we will!
