The e-hailing service initiative launched Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria has been met with heavy backlash over hike in transport cost from the Murtala Mohammed International Airport in Lagos.
FAAN had reportedly launched a car hire service through a software app which recommends drivers to travellers following the authority’s ban of the activities of other e-hailing service like Uber and Bolt around the airport.
While the ban had sparked public outrage, FAAN claimed to introduce the service as part of its efforts to ensure safety, security, and convenience of passengers and other airport users.
The outrage would intensify following a video of a traveller who recounted how he had enquired about the service of the FAAN app for a trip from the MMIA to Radison Blu hotel in Ikeja.
As seen in the clip, the traveller met with of the FAAN officials who checked and informed him that a trip from the airport to his destination will cost him N30,000.
The traveller who appeared familiar with Lagos terrain opted to trek few metres away from the airport and get Uber as he disclosed that same distance only cost between N6000 to N8,000 on Uber and other e-hailing hat.
‘I’m just landing back here in Nigeria again. I learnt that Uber and other rideshare here at the Lagos airport.
‘Let’s find out how much it costs to get a taxi from the airport now. I normally go to Ikeja which cost about N6,000 to N8,000 which is about four to six Dollars on Uber.
‘So, they have this new app that you have to use to get a ride and it costs N30,000 to Ikeja when it normally used to cost me at most N8,000. Me, I sabi. I won’t be paying that.’ He said.
The post had sparked reactions from netizens who called out the All Progressive Congress-led administration over the hike.
