The House of Representatives on Wednesday formally responded to the death of the former Deputy Comptroller of Customs Andrew Essien.
Essien slumped during session with the Public Account committee investigative hearing on the revenues and finances of the Nigeria Customs Services on Monday.
He was subsequently rushed to the National Assembly clinic where he was pronounced dead.
Describing Essien as a “dedicated and exemplary officer of the Nigeria Customs Service,” the lower chamber said he died “in active service during a convivial engagement with the Public Accounts Committee (PAC), where he shared his expertise and insights with warmth and professionalism, demonstrating his unwavering commitment to public service.”
While saying that he left a void that will be hard to fill, the Green chamber said “his legacy of selfless service, distinction, and dedication will continue to inspire us all.”
The statement released on Wednesday by Hon Akin Rotimi, House Committee on Media chairman, quoted the Chairman, House Committee on Customs & Excise Duties, Rep. Leke Abejide (ADC, Kogi), as describing the Deputy Comptroller Essien as “an outstanding and knowledgeable officer who served with distinction.
“He was a valuable partner in our efforts to strengthen Customs revenue collection and facilitate trade. His contributions will be deeply missed.”
Also, the chairman of the Public Account Committee, Hon Bamidele Salam, whose committee was carrying out the probe, was quoted as saying, ““We are shocked and saddened by his sudden passing. Deputy Comptroller Essien was a thorough and dedicated public servant who demonstrated a strong commitment to accountability and transparency.”
