The House of Representatives on Tuesday rejected a motion seeking an investigation into alleged unlawful allocation of federal lands within the Lagos International Trade Fair Complex,
The motion, sponsored by Rep. Ademorin Kuye (APC–Lagos), called for the Committee on Public Assets to conduct the investigation. Kuye, who chairs the committee, was supported by Rep. Yusuf Gagdi (APC–Plateau).
However, Rep. Francis Waive (APC–Delta), Chair of the Rules and Business Committee, proposed that the probe be handled by the Committee on Commerce instead. His position was backed by Rep. Mark Esset (APC–Akwa Ibom).
A third proposal came from Rep. Gbefwi Gaza (APC–Nasarawa), who suggested the constitution of an ad-hoc committee, but the House rejected the idea amid a noisy session.
The disagreement led to the rejection of other motions that followed, in what appeared to be a protest by some lawmakers.
Among the rejected motions were a call for establishment of a military base in Baruten/Kaima Federal Constituency of Kwara State to tackle insecurity, and a motion on addressing Nigeria’s classification as a “country of particular concern” by former U.S. President Donald Trump.
Presiding over the session, Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu called for an executive session to restore order.
Lawmakers subsequently went into a closed-door meeting that lasted about 20 minutes before proceedings resumed.
