President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has urged Nigerians to embrace peace, unity and religious tolerance as Christians across the country celebrate Christmas.
In his Christmas goodwill message, the President said the season goes beyond festivities and offers a moment to reflect on the birth of Jesus Christ and his message of grace, hope and goodwill to humanity.
He extended warm wishes to Christians in Nigeria and around the world, while praying for peace in the nation, particularly among people of different religious beliefs.
Tinubu reaffirmed his commitment to protecting religious freedom and ensuring the safety of all citizens, regardless of faith or ethnicity.
He stressed that no Nigerian should suffer discrimination or violence for practising their religion.
Highlighting the contributions of Christians to national development, the President noted that the teachings of Christ have inspired many to care for the vulnerable and promote peace, harmony and tolerance in their communities. He commended individuals and groups who continue to spread hope and faith in the face of ongoing challenges.
“On this Holy Day, I wish all Christians in Nigeria and around the world a Merry Christmas. I thank God for the opportunity to serve as the leader of our great country, and I pray for peace in our land, especially among individuals of differing religious beliefs.
“As your President, I remain committed to doing everything within my power to enshrine religious freedom in Nigeria and to protect all people of different faiths from violence.
“As we celebrate the birth of Jesus, let us also reflect on the many contributions that Christians in Nigeria, as followers of Christ, have made and continue to make toward the progress of our country.
“The love of Christ and the message of the Gospel have inspired many Christians to care for the vulnerable and less privileged in our society. We honour those who, following the example of Jesus, work tirelessly to promote peace, harmony, and tolerance in their communities.”
Reflecting on his administration since assuming office in 2023, Tinubu said his government remains steadfast in its commitment to safeguarding Nigeria’s security, unity and stability, in line with the Constitution. He added that all Nigerians have the right to live, worship and pursue their aspirations in safety and dignity.
The President also revealed that he has engaged with leaders of the country’s major faiths throughout the year, particularly on issues of insecurity and religious intolerance.
According to him, these engagements would be strengthened to foster collaboration between government and religious institutions, prevent conflict and promote peaceful coexistence.
As many Nigerians travel to reunite with family and loved ones during the holiday season, Tinubu urged citizens to exercise patience and discipline on the roads. He wished travellers safe journeys and safe returns.
Expressing confidence in divine guidance and the collective strength of Nigerians, the President said the country would continue working towards a future that coming generations can be proud of.
