Tracka has renewed calls for transparency over the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway project, raising concerns about cost, environmental impact, and public accountability.
According to the group, the coastal road project is not only about infrastructure but it has exposed key governance issues that need urgent public attention.
Tracka noted that the total cost of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway remains unclear and there is limited public information on how the contract was awarded and executed.
The group also raised concerns about demolitions along the project route. It said several businesses have been displaced, while questions remain over compensation and support for affected owners.
On environmental impact, Tracka warned that the coastal highway project may affect wetlands and coastal communities. It added that the long-term climate risks of the project have not been clearly addressed.
The group further questioned the phased commissioning of the road, noting that the approach creates doubts about whether the project is being completed in full or presented in stages for public attention.
Tracka also said there is little clarity on the design, scope, and long-term maintenance plan of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway.
To get answers, Tracka said it submitted a Freedom of Information request on March 2 to the Federal Ministry of Works Nigeria through the Minister of Works, Dave Umahi.
The request sought for details on the project cost, procurement process, and implementation plan.
However, Tracka said it has not received any response from the ministry.
The group said the lack of response weakens public trust and raises concerns about how major infrastructure projects are managed in Nigeria.
“This lack of transparency weakens public trust and raises further concerns about how large-scale infrastructure projects are being managed.”
Tracka stressed that public projects must be transparent and accountable.
“Public projects of this magnitude must be open, accountable, and people-centred. Citizens deserve to know the true cost, the process, and the long-term impact.
“We will continue to #followtheprojects and demand accountability because #publicfundsmustworkforthegoodofthepeople.”
