Troops of Sector 2, Operation FANSAN YAMMA, have foiled an attempted attack by suspected terrorists on the Forward Operating Base (FOB) in Kasuwan Daji, Kaura Namoda Local Government Area of Zamfara State, rescuing nine abducted civilians in the process.
The operation, however, claimed the lives of one Army officer and one Police officer, while two soldiers sustained gunshot wounds.
This was disclosed in a statement issued on Sunday by the Acting Deputy Director, Army Public Relations, 8 Division Nigerian Army/Sector 2 Operation FANSAN YAMMA, Lt.-Col. Olaniyi Osoba.
According to Osoba, the incident occurred at about 1:40 a.m. on Sunday, when the terrorists attempted to infiltrate the military base under the cover of darkness.
He said alert troops detected the movement early and responded with coordinated and overwhelming firepower, forcing the attackers to retreat in disarray.
Osoba added that reinforcement troops immediately launched a hot pursuit of the fleeing terrorists, who had abducted an unspecified number of residents from nearby communities during the attack.
“The relentless pursuit by the troops led to the rescue of nine abducted locals, who were safely recovered,” he said.
He, however, disclosed that one Army officer and one Police officer were killed during the fierce gun battle.
“Additionally, two soldiers sustained gunshot wounds and were promptly evacuated by air for advanced medical care. Both personnel remain in stable condition,” Osoba added.
According to him, troops have since secured and dominated the area and are conducting exploitation operations to determine the full extent of the terrorists’ losses while ensuring the safety of residents.
Osoba said the failed attack marked another major setback for the terrorists amid sustained military operations across the North-West.
He also dismissed online reports claiming that six security personnel were killed in the attack.
“Contrary to rumours circulating online that six personnel died, it is worthy to mention that only one Army officer and one Police officer paid the supreme price,” he said.
He reaffirmed that Operation FANSAN YAMMA remains committed to sustaining offensive operations, protecting vulnerable communities, and dismantling terrorist networks until lasting peace and security are restored across the North-West.
