Former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, Mr. Godwin Emefiele, has today been remanded in the custody of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC.
This order of the court followed his arraignment for alleged abuse of office. NPO Reported earlier that Emefiele was to be arraigned over fresh 26 count charges bordering on abuse of his office when he held sway as the boss of Nigeria’s apex bank.
Emefiele and his co-defedant, Henry Omoile, had pleaded no guilty before Justice Rahman Oshodi of the Lagos State Special Offences Court. While Emefiele was sent to EFCC custody, Omoile is to be remanded in the Correctional Centre in Lagos. Their case will come up on Thursday when Justice Oshodi is expected to rule on their bail application.
The lawyer particularly urged the court to impose the same bail conditions earlier granted to the defendant by Justice Hamzat Muazu of the Federal Capital Territory High Court in Abuja.
He added that Emefiele be released to his lawyers pending the perfection of the bail terms.
The EFCC lawyer, Rotimi Oyedepo, SAN, did not oppose the bail application. But he urged the judge to impose conditions that would compel the defendants to court for their trial.
