The Wole Soyinka Center for Investigative Journalism (WSCIJ), has called on investigative journalists to submit their proposals for gender-focused stories that expose systemic injustices, promote accountability, and amplify the voices of women and girls.
The call supported by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, is part of the Champion Building component of the Report Women! programme which aims to address the underrepresentation and poor coverage of issues affecting girls and women.
The initiative will fund and mentor selected investigative journalists on leadership projects, whose work will spotlight systemic violations of women’s and girls’ rights.
Applicants are expected to pitch investigative stories or leadership initiatives that include the following:
Expose abuse of power or systemic injustices affecting girls and women.
Challenge harmful policies, practices, or neglect by government, institutions, or other actors.
Promote accountability in the protection and advancement of women’s and girls’ rights as fundamental human rights.
Increase the presence and perspectives of women and girls in media through in-depth, evidence-based reporting.
Investigate the restrictions to women in political leadership
Advance the development or implementation of gender policies in media organisations.
According to the statement by the WSCIJ, the deadline for submission is Monday 28th of July, 2025.
WSCIJ has through training, advocacy, research, and mentorship supported over 150 reporters, produced impactful investigations, and advanced newsroom leadership for women through the Female Reporters Leadership Programme (FRLP), which has trained 86 fellows and reached thousands.
