A High Court sitting at the Tafawa Balewa Square, Lagos State, has sentenced a Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) driver, Andrew Ominikoron, to death by hanging over the murder of a 22-year-old fashion designer, Bamise Ayanwola.
Ominikoron, who was arraigned before Justice Serifat Sonaike in a judgment that lasted over two and half hours, was found guilty and convicted by the court.
According to reports, the presiding judge held that the prosecution, the Lagos State Government, successfully proved beyond reasonable doubt that the defendant committed the offence.
The judge held, “that for the death of Oluwabamise Ayanwola, you will be hanged by the neck until you are dead. May God have mercy upon you.”
While no eye witness account of the incident was tendered, the court based its judgement on a series of circumstantial evidence and the evidence of the pathologist.
Also used as proofs were the dying declaration of the victim which, according to judge, indicated that the defendant was the last person to see Bamise before her death on February 26, 2022.
