The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to postpone the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Area Council elections scheduled for Saturday, February 21, 2026, citing the Ramadan fast.
In a letter dated January 22, 2026, the party said the proposed election date falls within the Ramadan period, which will be observed by a significant number of voters in the FCT.
The letter was signed by the ADC National Chairman, Senator David A. B. Mark, and the National Secretary, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola.
According to the party, holding the elections during Ramadan could affect voter turnout and limit participation among eligible voters observing the fast. The ADC said the timing may place such voters at a disadvantage.
The party therefore urged INEC to reconsider the election date in order to ensure broad participation in the democratic process and safeguard the voting rights of all citizens.
The ADC explained that its request was aimed at promoting inclusivity and ensuring that Nigerians, regardless of religious belief, are able to freely exercise their constitutional rights without constraint.
It appealed to the electoral body to reschedule the Area Council elections to a date after the Ramadan period.
The party also noted that its engagement with INEC followed established procedures, adding that it was prepared to comply with all legal and constitutional requirements.
It further requested guidance on the formal processes for submitting such an application in line with the Electoral Act, the Constitution, and INEC guidelines.
Reaffirming its commitment to democratic governance, the ADC stated that electoral credibility is strengthened when election processes are designed to encourage mass participation and reflect sensitivity to the social and religious realities of the electorate.
