Governor Ahmadu Fintiri of Adamawa has formally defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Fintiri announced his defection on Friday at a news conference in Yola.
He said the decision followed wide consultations with stakeholders across the state and was taken in the interest of stability, development and prosperity for Adamawa.
The governor said joining the APC would help the state align with the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Tinubu, especially in the areas of social welfare, infrastructure, housing and inclusive economic growth.
He explained that the move was not motivated by personal ambition but by the need to reposition Adamawa for greater national relevance and access to federal collaboration.
Fintiri reaffirmed his commitment to the mandate given to him in the 2019 and 2023 elections and said his administration would continue to honour its social contract with the people.
According to him, the defection would be carried out with the full political structure of the state, including the 226 wards and 21 local government areas, as well as elected and appointed officials.
The governor listed achievements of his administration in security, road construction, education, healthcare, housing and market development.
He also highlighted programmes in youth and women empowerment, water supply, electricity and the creation of new chiefdoms and districts to promote inclusion.
Fintiri assured residents that the defection would not affect ongoing projects or development programmes in infrastructure, education, healthcare, job creation and scholarships.
He urged supporters to register with the APC and remain actively involved in the political process, stressing that the decision was taken in the collective interest of Adamawa State.
