Former Nigerian Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, has hailed Ghanaian President, John Mahama, for raising the resolution for the declaration of the transatlantic slave trade the gravest crime against humanity.
NPO Reported that Mahama had yesterday raised the motion at the United Nations General Assembly.
The Ghanaian President made the call for the resolution in commemoration of the Second International Decade for People of African Descent and the African Union’s Decade of Reparations.
The resolution saw 123 UN members, including Nigeria, voted in its favour.
However, three countries: Argentina, Israel and the United States voted against it while 52 abstained.
The adoption of the motion by the UN Assembly had drawn commendation for Mahama with Atiku also showering encomium on the Ghanaian President for the bold move.
As contained in a statement issued on his X handle on Thursday, the ex-Vice President labelled the transatlantic slave trade as a wound on the conscience of humanity.
He commended Ghana for standing on the side of justice and truth with the resolution.
“This moment speaks to the pain of our past and the dignity of our people.
“The trafficking of enslaved Africans was not just a tragedy for Africa, but a wound on the conscience of humanity.
“I commend Ghana for helping the world remember, acknowledge, and stand on the side of justice and truth.” Atiku wrote.
