- Safiu Kehinde
Former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, has declared the Supreme Court’s judgement over the African Democractic Congress’ (ADC) leadership crisis as a welcomed development.
NPO Reported that the apex court had on Thursday dismissed the status quo antebellum ruling delivered by the Appeal Court.
While nullifying the ruling in a unanimous judgement delivered by a five-member panel, the Supreme Court held that the Court of Appeal had no business making a preservative order in respect of a case that was pending before the trial court.
The apex court ordered parties to return to the Federal High Court for hearing of the case filed by an aggrieved chieftain of the party, Nafiu Bala Gombe, challenging, among others, the emergence of the David Mark-led leadership of the party.
The ruling had since attracted different interpretations with some ADC members and supporters claiming the judgement affirmed Mark’s leadership of the party.
Reacting in a statement issued on his X handle. Atiku also claimed the apex court’s ruling affirmed Mark’s leadership.
He however charged the members not to relent, stressing that the struggle is far from over.
“Even as we welcome the Supreme Court’s firm affirmation of David Mark and the leadership of our great party, the African Democratic Congress, let no one be lulled into complacency.
“The road ahead remains long in our cause to take back and rescue our country.” He wrote.
The ex-Vice Prseident further described the court’s ruling as victory for all Nigerians.
“This victory belongs to Nigerians, the courageous millions who refuse to surrender their future.
“We thank them, and we urge them to remain steadfast, because the struggle is far from over. As we press on, let this truth guide us: eternal vigilance is the price of liberty.” He added.
