The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria has clarified that there was no fire outbreak at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, contrary to its earlier statement on Sunday.
In a fresh statement issued by the agency’s Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, Henry Agbebire, FAAN said preliminary findings showed that the incident at Terminal 2 was caused by smoke discharged from the terminal’s FM-200 fire suppression system.
According to the authority, there was no actual fire, adding that the smoke observed in the affected area resulted from the activation of the automated fire suppression system.
“The smoke observed within the affected area resulted from the discharge of the terminal’s FM-200 fire suppression system” the statement read.
FAAN said it had commenced investigations to determine what triggered the fire suppression system.
The authority added that normal operations had resumed at the terminal while efforts continued to establish the exact cause of the incident.
“Normal operations have since resumed at the terminal, while detailed investigations are ongoing to determine the exact cause of the incident,” FAAN said.
The agency expressed appreciation to passengers, airlines, airport users and other stakeholders for their understanding and cooperation, reiterating its commitment to ensuring the safety and security of airport operations.
NPO reports FAAN had earlier announced that a fire had broken out at Terminal 2 of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, stating that it’s Aerodrome Rescue and Firefighting Service had been deployed to contain the incident.
However, the authority later withdrew the claim, clarifying that the incident involved smoke from the terminal’s fire suppression system and not a fire outbreak.
