Presidential candidate of the Labour Party Peter Obi, has expressed solidarity with former Deputy Senate President Ike Ekweremadu over the organ transplant mess for which he and his wife, Beatrice are being tried in the United Kingdom.
Ekweremadu and his wife were arrested after allegedly facilitating the travel of a Nigerian suspected to be underage, David Ukpo In order to donate his kidney to the lawmaker’s daughter Sonia.
They were denied bail on Thursday.
Identifying with the Ekweremadu on Friday, Obi said, “My family and I are with the Ekweremadu’s over their travail. We join all men of goodwill in praying for the healing of their daughter and commit them into God’s hand for justice to be done.”
However, Obi’s tweet appeared not to have gone down well with some of his supporters who condemned his statement.
While some said identifying with Ekweremadu is a sign he is not different from typical Nigerian politicians who don’t care less about processes and procedures, others accused him of showing empathy with the family without any mention of the poor boy who would have been victim of an unwholesome practice.
One of such Obi’s supporters, Eze Chika Michael, wrote “I just withdrew my support for Peter Obi I will never support anymore. Its obvious you and then are the same.”
