INEC Makes Move to Bring to book its Resident Commissioner in what appears to be a major upset for the commission in its conduct of the 2023 general elections
The Independent National Electoral Commission has asked the Inspector General of Police Usman Baba Alkali to arrest the Resident Electoral Commissioner for Adamawa State, Barr. Yunusa Hudu Ari.
This was part of the resolutions of the commission after rising from its meeting held in Abuja .
In a terse statement released on its verified twitter handle Tuesday afternoon, INEC stated thus:
“At its meeting today, 18th April 2023, the Commission discussed matters arising from the Adamawa Governorship election and decided to: 1. Write to the Inspector-General of Police for the immediate investigation and possible prosecution of the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) for Adamawa State, Barr. Hudu Yunusa Ari.
“Request the Secretary to the Government of the Federation to draw the attention of the appointing authority to the unwholesome behaviour of the REC for further action.
“The collation process shall resume at a time to be determined by the Returning Officer. Detailed official statement will follow shortly.”
NPO Reported earlier that Ari had declared the candidate of the All Progressive Congress in the Adamawa state election, Senator Aisha Binani, winner of the poll in what was considered an illegal move by the REC.
The commission had however swiftly reversed the declaration while saying the exercise had not been concluded.
The action of the REC had caused commotion in the state, leading to protests and an attack on a National Commissioner who was mistaken for the REC.
