Now to Be Effective From Next Admissions Season
By Halimah Olamide
Vice Chancellors and Rectors and other stakeholders have on Thursday opposed the ban on admission of under 18 students into universities and other tertiary institutions.
The Minister of Education Prof Tahir Mamman, had announced the new policy at the ongoing Policy meeting holding in Abuja.
However, after loud protests from those present at the meeting, the Minister had called on the heads of tertiary education institutions if they were in consonance with the Decision.
The stakeholders, comprising representatives from tertiary institutions across the country, loudly expressed their disapproval, prompting the minister to ask, “Are we together?” The response was a resounding “No!”
There was a resounding no to the question.
The Vice Chancellor of Elizade University, Kayode Ijaduola, raised an objection, stating that candidates had already sat for the UTME and should be allowed to get admission.
The minister conceded, saying that henceforth, the admission requirements should be stated clearly for future admissions.
However, the stakeholders protested that only candidates who are 16 years old should be admitted for the 2024 academic session.
