Tension erupted outside the Federal High Court in Abuja after an angry crowd confronted Barrister Marshall Abubakar, lawyer to detained social media personality, Justice Crack.
The incident came after claims emerged that the defence counsel withdrew Justice Crack’s bail application during court proceedings.
The bail application followed interventions led by human rights activist, Omoyele Sowore, who reportedly met with the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), demanding the release of the blogger.
According to media organization, Sahara Reporters, after the case was called, Barr. Olufemi M. Balogun, a member of the defence team, rose to announce appearance for the lawyers representing Justice Crack.
However, Marshal, who entered the courtroom moments later, objected to the move, insisting that as lead counsel and the lawyer who filed the bail application, he alone had the right to introduce the defence team before the court.
This therefore created tension in the courtroom, prompting Justice Abdulmalik to ask the defendant, who was standing in the dock, to clarify who among the lawyers was leading his legal team.
The judge urged the lawyers to resolve the issue amicably, noting that since they were appearing together for the same client, one counsel should simply announce appearance and introduce the others.
