World Food Programme Laments One Million Ukrainians Turned Refugees in One Week; Sets Up Food Relief

The Police on Thursday said they have arrested 36 suspects in connection with terrorism and 388 others over alleged murder, armed robbery, kidnapping and cultism in the last two months. The Inspector-General of Police (I-G), Mr. Usman Baba made this known in Abuja during a meeting with Strategic Police Managers, consisting of Assistant Inspectors-General of Police (AIGs) and Commissioners of Police (CPs). The House of Representatives has rejected a bill to stop public officials from sending their children and wards to schools abroad without approval of the Minister of Education. Rep. Sergius Ogun (PDP- Edo) who sponsored the bill while leading debate on the floor of the house on Thursday in Abuja, proposed that a public officer could only send his/her children or wards to foreign schools after approval of the minister of education. The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency on Thursday filed an eight-count charge against the embattled Deputy Commissioner of Police, Abba Kyari and six others. NDLEA accused them of dealing in 17.55 kilogrammes of cocaine. Others charged with Kyari, are ACP Sunday J. Ubua, ASP Bawa James, Inspector Simon Agirgba, Inspector John Nuhu, Chibunna Patrick Umeibe and Emeka Alphonsus Ezenwanne. Hopes of many Nigerian evacuees from Poland were dashed Thursday as the flight that was slated to bring them back was cancelled. The reason for the cancellation was not immediately known to many of the evacuees. They were later told that the Air Peace could not flout aviation regulations having been delayed. The coronavirus pandemic in Africa has had particularly devastating effects for the continent’s women, according to the World Health Organization (WHO). “It’s been a huge burden for women, not only a physical, but also a psychological one,” said Matshidiso Moeti, WHO Regional Director for Africa. “Many women working in the informal sector had lost income as a result of the pandemic and had spent more time caring for children due to closed schools.’’ The WHO also noted an increase in domestic violence. The Nigerian Army has advised the public to disregard a fake online recruitment portal being circulated on the social media and other platforms advertising recruitment of candidates into its 83 Regular Recruit Intake. The Director, Army Public Relations, Brig.-Gen. Onyema Nwachukwu, gave the advice in a statement on Thursday in Abuja.
