Governor of Central Bank of Nigeria, Godwin Emefiele on Friday made jokes over the redesign of the Naira which some Nigerians have referred to as “mere repainting.”
Speaking at the 2022 Bankers’ Forum in Lagos, Emefiele, while making remarks over the newly redesigned Naira which were unveiled by President Muhammed Buhari on Wednesday, asked Nigerians to immediately embrace what he called “the repainted notes.”
He was making reference to how many Nigerians have condemned the new notes as merely repainted ones.
“As from December 31, those old notes will no longer be accepted. So, go and change your Naira to the painted ones. If you don’t, you will have to burn them.”
Also make reference to how Nigerians have derided him over his supervision of the new notes, Emefiele said “I have seen different shades of me.”
He however thanked President Buhari for approving the redesign the N200, N500 and N100 notes. He said it takes only forward-looking president to grant approval for such a move.
“This policy will quicken the cashless economy,” he told the bankers.
