The remains of former National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, Bamanga Tukur, have been laid to rest in his hometown, Yola, Adamawa State.
Tukur, who died on Saturday in Abuja at the age of 91, was buried on Sunday in accordance with Islamic rites.
The funeral prayer was led by the Chief Imam of Modibbo Adama Central Mosque, Yola, Ahmadu Bobboi, at about 10:50am.
His remains were later buried at the family residence in Fadde-Sanda, along Abuja Road, Yola, at about 11:30am.
President Bola Tinubu had on Saturday mourned Tukur’s death, describing the former PDP chairman as a prominent figure in Nigeria’s political and economic history.
In a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu described Tukur as a “towering figure” whose career spanned public administration, governance, industry, politics and pan-African business leadership.
Tukur served as governor of the old Gongola State and later as Minister of Industries. He also served as National Chairman of the PDP.
He is survived by two wives and 18 children, including the Adamawa State Secretary to the State Government, Awwal Tukur.
The funeral was attended by business mogul Aliko Dangote, Adamawa State Governor Ahmadu Fintiri, Senator Iya Abbas, representing Adamawa Central, and former Governor Jibrilla Bindow.
Traditional rulers, political leaders, associates and other dignitaries from Adamawa State and beyond also attended the funeral.
